User experience design

If my proposal will be implemented, I will make sure that the layout is simple and straightforward, which will help users find content easily. On the other hand, I will keep the whole interview process rich and interesting, so that visitors will not be bored.

The project will also include some background music. Considering that most of our potential users are Chinese culture and people who want to understand Chinese culture, I will add some Chinese culture songs throughout the project. Appropriate sound effects allow users to explore more happily, making the project more attractive. As background music, in order to let visitors, know more about Chinese culture, I will apply smooth Chinese music types. Also, considering that the concert is inconvenient or unpleasant for some people, the music will be designed to be closable. And the main genre and style of music I will present an example at the end of the entire concept.

“Improving interactivity is a bridge that is not motivating, guiding the audience step by step through the entire documentary to achieve the main idea of helping viewers improve the user experience.” (Balliu, 2014) So interactivity is very important in such an online documentary. In order to allow users to participate and interact, there will be many interactive elements to be applied in the project. Firstly, there will be communication settings on the page of the interview video, visitors can use this setting to ask questions, and we will answer or update the page as soon as possible. Secondly, in the Sydney map mentioned earlier, users can click on the major Chinese communities in Sydney to draw a lot of Chinese information such as culture, food, festivals or music.

Main content

The main content structure of the project will consist of multiple media formats. They are interviews, visual introductions, music appreciation and interaction. The interview video is a major part of the project and therefore requires adequate preparation and post-editing capabilities. It includes preliminary research to determine the ability of respondents, organize interviews and video editors.

The interview will be for three people, one Chinese who has lived in Australia for many years, and one international student from China who is an Australian native. The main content of the interview was to ask them about China, Chinese culture, Chinese culture Australia and their understanding of cultural interactivity and cultural inclusion. The entire interview will be conducted in a chat, and the interviewer will also answer some of the interviewees’ misunderstandings about Chinese culture. This will make it easier for viewers to get information from interviews. The setting of the communication page also allows the audience to increase their interaction with us.

First, they will introduce themselves in the interview, and then they will answer the questions, and I envisioned a few questions that can outline the entire topic.

they are, respectively:

1. What is your opinion of the Chinese and Australian society? What is different about them?

2. How do you see more and more Chinese people coming to Australia with Chinese culture?

3. What do you know about Chinese culture?

4. Do you think that culture and culture should be separated from each other or tolerant of each other? why?

5. Say something about the China and Chinese culture in your impressions.

These questions are very representative, users can think through these questions, think about the current situation of Chinese culture and improve their understanding of Chinese culture.

Feasibility

According to my imagination, the range of skills required to complete a project is wide. But we have learned relevant knowledge in both the workshop and the classroom. So this is not a serious difficulty, and teamwork and good attitude are necessary in group work. In terms of feasibility, online documentaries require a range of hardware support and manufacturers with operational hardware and software-related skills. The hardware required is mainly used during interviews. The software is used in editing. The main problem with this project is the query of time and information, because it is related to the culture of a nation or country, which requires a lot of research. Therefore, time allocation will be an important factor. But I think that if the time is well allocated, the feasibility of the project will be very high.

The required equipment and software are as follows:

Equipment:

Video camera

Tripod

Audio Recorder with Microphone

Software:

Adobe Premiere

Adobe Photoshop CC / Adobe Illustrator

Hype 5

Dropbox

Below is a series of wireframes, music examples and references that you can browse and learn more about this project.

User Interface Design

Because the project has two main themes – Chinese New Year culture and cultural tolerance, it is mainly visually chosen to focus on the red and yellow of Chinese culture and can be depicted by a series of different symbols and images. Color is crucial for a project because color is what users first feel. “Graphic designers also use colour to provoke a psychological response and evoke associations.” (Austin & Doust, 2007 p.68). Chinese knot is a symbol of Chinese culture. A Chinese knot will be placed on the homepage. After the mouse clicks on the Chinese knot, the entire documentary will begin. Minimalism will be used throughout the design of the documentary to make it easy for the audience to operate. I don’t want the kind of information bombing to complete the documentary, which makes people who don’t understand Chinese culture or potential customers who are new here to feel boring and incomprehensible. The red and yellow look very bright are actually two colors that can reflect Chinese culture. Such a strong color contract can create a clear visual experience for the user and will not make the user feel very messy. This design can effectively attract the attention of users. Figure 1 is a rough composition of Homepage.

Figure 1

After clicking the Chinese knot to open the documentary, a video call interface will appear, and four callers will appear in the interface, which is also related to the three interviewees mentioned above and one narration. Users can click on each caller at will, and when opened, they will become interview screens, and respondents will explain their views. The user will have a narration when opening the first call. This narrative will introduce the story of the entire Spring Festival and Chinese culture. The other three are the three respondents who will say what they think about some issues. I simply present this composition in Figure 1.

Figure 2

The navigation menu will be designed to be as small as possible to save space and make the interface simpler and more beautiful. The navigation menu will appear below the entire page, and the options ‘Homepage’ ‘Return’, ‘About’, ‘Map’ and ‘Contact us’ will appear in the navigation menu. Behind the Map option is a map of Sydney and the map shows the main Chinese community in Sydney. The reason for choosing Sydney is that Sydney is the city with the largest number of Chinese communities in Australia today. So, Sydney’s choice is very representative. And I will join social media sharing in the lower right corner to make it easier for users to share this page to social media.

In order to maintain a minimalist style and allow users to quickly identify the availability of elements, we will maintain a clear layout at the same time. Our interviews will be conducted in English, but in order to facilitate people with low English proficiency, we will add Chinese and English subtitles below the interview video.

In the entire documentary font, a clearer font will be selected. For example, the font selected in text and subtitle will be Time New Roman and the title font will be Forte. The size of the font will be strictly controlled to prevent visual paralysis and confusion.

Aim

The main goal of the documentary is to help more people understand the Chinese New Year and Chinese culture. It can lead to some questions about cultural differences and resonate with everyone. In addition, by setting a series of interactive elements, I hope that the audience will have a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and stimulate the inclusive of Chinese culture and the inclusive of foreign culture.

Audience

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 1.2 million Chinese ancestry live in Australia in 2018, accounting for 5% of the Australian population. This shows that Chinese ancestry has become a big tribe in Australia. Therefore, the main target audience for my project is all those interested in Chinese culture and some Chinese ancestry. Mainly among young people aged 18-25, they are mainly students. For non-Chinese students, they can use this project to gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture. For international students from China, this is also a good opportunity to find memories. This can find some memories of their hometown. In general, this project is mainly to promote Chinese culture to the public through the introduction of the Chinese New Year.

Platform

Inclusive or exclusive will be created as an interactive documentary that runs on the following platforms: desktops and laptops. The main target of the project is young students, and if they can apply the mobile platform, they will be better attracted to the audience. But based on some time constraints and technical deficiencies, it may be difficult to achieve operations on mobile platforms. So the project will be based on a computer platform rather than a mobile platform.

Social Interactivity

The use of social media is an important channel to promote and engage audiences to increase project impact. “Inclusive or exclusive” will offer Facebook and Twitter as a social media platform to allow users to share this online documentary site on their own social networks. In a way, it can expand and attract potential audiences. In addition, a Facebook page will be created to allow users to communicate and discuss on this homepage. And I also regularly interact with the audience on this page to improve the overall interactivity.

Synopsis

Synopsis

“Inclusive or exclusive” is an interactive online documentary about Chinese New Year. Australia is a multicultural and multiracial country, and today Asian culture is also very popular in Australia. This documentary is designed to let users learn about Chinese culture through the introduction of the Chinese New Year. The argument I want to emphasize is that Australia’s inclusiveness and diversity are conducive to the integration of various cultures, and with the development of China’s geopolitics, the influence of Chinese and Chinese cultures in Australia is growing. The main interview will be with three local visitors, Australian natives, Chinese students from China and Chinese who have lived in Australia for many years. In addition, there is a small interactive game to make the audience experience a better person in the Chinese community. Learn about Chinese New Year and Chinese culture.

Research

Australia is a developed country with a good social system and living environment, so people from all over the world are willing to come to Australia. The Chinese nation is a big part of these immigrants. Sydney is one of the most popular destinations. However, there are not many organizations or studies to focus on these peoples or cultures. Many people have different opinions and even misunderstandings about some cultures.

In order to make the content and structure of this online documentary project more abundant and persuasive, I have made research plans and conducted a series of research on Chinese culture and Chinese culture in Australian society, including Chinese population, Chinese New Year, Chinese customs. And in addition, my research also develops the future of Chinese culture in Australia. In the interview, some questions about personal opinions about multiculturalism will also be mentioned, which are also within the scope of my research. Because multicultural pluralism is a focus of this theme.
